WiMAX Telecom GmbH was the sole provider to obtain the nationwide rights to the WiMax frequencies in Austria at the auction of October 4, 2004. With a range of 25 kilometers and transmission rates of up to 70 Mbps, this new radio technology is expected to become standard for wireless broadband internet access and mobile telephony. WiMAX, which provides a throughput rate 30 times faster than UMTS 3G, is the first technology offering both realtime and unlimited mobile services. 12/10/2003, Broadband Wireless Business Magazine - Finnish Town To Extend Network With Airspan's Gear - The town of Narpes/Narpio in Finland has selected Airspan Networks Inc.'s broadband wireless technology as an extension of the town's core fiber network. Airspan's WipLL wireless equipment will be deployed by the local Finnish communication firm LAN & WAN, in conjunction with Dynamo Net. Dynamo Net, which is the town of Narpes' own company, will interconnect the broadband wireless network with an optical core network. The project is scheduled for completion by November of 2004. The new broadband wireless network, which will utilize the licensed 3.5 GHz frequency band, will enable high-speed access service for more than 10,000 local residents.

The system design has been completed and implementation will start in early June. The network will be in commercial use in early September 2002.

The network covers the whole city center area of 15 sqkm and can reach up to 9,000 people living in the Mäntsälä center. The network is based on Radionet’s new WLAN technology developed for demanding wireless operators. Radionet’s base station technology is based on a 2.4 GHz 11Mb/s WLAN standard in conformity to IEEE 802.11b. Its ability to transfer data is significantly faster than through the normal modems or ISDN. Radionet wireless broadband network is a flexible data transfer system based on radio frequency technique. It offers users the freedom of mobility and fast access to the Internet. Radionet network uses the licence free 2.4 GHz band and in the near future the 5 GHz band as well.

The network design and implementation work is already in progress and the first phase will be in operation in early June. LTKK / Tietoliikennetekniikanlaitos - WLPR.NET is a research network of a three-year WLAN-project of Datacommunications Laboratory of Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT). Project researches open, operator-neutral network environment (so called Lappeenranta-model). WLPR.NET-network is a network open for everybody. You can join into the network using a WLAN-card that supports wireless local area technology (IEEE 802.11b). The network offers local services which can be provided by private persons or companies (map-services, games etc.).

Only the organisations involved into the project have an access to the Internet from WLPR.NET network. Other users need a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP), that has joined into the WLPR.NET network. This kind of service provider does not exist in WLPR.NET network yet, but Kymen Puhelin has been testing the functionality of the network since summer 2002 and serving commercial connections is technically possible with a rather rapid timetable. Coverage area of the network covers Skinnarila, Sammonlahti and the harbor of Lappeenranta. Coverage of the network in the town centre will improve during the year 2003. Companies can participate building the network by giving internal network capacity or wireless access points for the usage of the network or participating the project as a support member.

1/19/2004, Broadband Wireless Business Magazine Conifer Wireless Builds Kosova Network Conifer Wireless has completed the design and construction phase of a wireless network for IPKOnet LLC, a large Internet service provider (ISP) in Kosova. IPKOnet LLC plans to use the network to provide IP-based services to 75 percent of the populated areas in Kosova.

IPKOnet LLC will provide the services mostly to business and government institutions. The company is a commercial spin-off of IPKO, which was Kosova's leading nongovernmental, not-for-profit ISP, formed as part of the reconstruction efforts in Kosova. Conifer and its sister company, EMCEE Communications, provided the equipment and SkyPath software for the network. Conifer built five wireless access hubs, which are connected to IPKOnet’s microwave backbone and its network operations center in Prishtina. IPKOnet and Conifer are planning to extend the network to additional areas of Kosova in the spring of 2004.

October 23, 2003 - Statoil Offers Secure Wireless Access to Clients in 300 Service Stations in Norway - Statoil is the only service station chain in Europe equipped to offer wireless access to its customers. The wireless access solution is already in place in 80 Statoil stations throughout Norway. By year-end 300 Statoil stations throughout the country will offer secure wireless access to its customers. Statoil has teamed up with Telenor in order to unwire its service stations. UNSTRUNG - Zurich, January 18, 2005 - WiMax Telecom Acquires Spectrum WiMAX Telecom GmbH, a subsidiary of the Swiss WiMAX Telecom AG, has acquired the nationwide frequencies for WiMax in Austria. WiMAX Telecom was founded by Werner Kastzler, the former CEO of Telekom Austria and Ericsson Austria, together with Dov Bar-Gera, the founder of surfEU, RSLCom Austria and Airpage. All activities will, in the future, be steered by WiMAX Telecom AG, Switzerland, which already has concrete plans for a rollout among others in Switzerland. Provided the frequencies are made available by OFCOM (Swiss Federal Office of Communications), customers in Switzerland will be able to benefit from WiMax as early as end of 2005.

WiMAX Telecom GmbH was the sole provider to obtain the nationwide rights to the WiMax frequencies in Austria at the auction of October 4, 2004. With a range of 25 kilometers and transmission rates of up to 70 Mbps, this new radio technology is expected to become standard for wireless broadband internet access and mobile telephony. WiMAX, which provides a throughput rate 30 times faster than UMTS 3G, is the first technology offering both realtime and unlimited mobile services. The voice-over-IP technology, set to be incorporated in mobile phones during 2005, will enable customers to make mobile phone calls throughout Switzerland at far lower rates and without paying horrendous roaming fees.
