Our Next Generation Wireless Broadband is extremely fast in both directions, allowing speeds of up to 2Mbps. Akorn Access provides broadband fixed wireless to select areas of north Georgia including the city of Cumming in Forsyth county and the Amicalola and Burnt Mountain areas of Pickens, Lumpkin, and Dawson counties. We provide T1 quality service which is nearly twice the bi-directional speed of ADSL, and several times faster than cable. Akorn Wireless Broadband uses wireless radio frequencies set aside by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). To be eligible for our service your location needs to receive adequate signal strength from our transmission antenna. A few things can affect the strength of your signal. Generally, your location needs to be within four miles of a Akorn broadband transmission tower. Additionally, objects like trees, buildings and hills can affect your signal strength. However, the closer you are to our tower, the less impact those objects have on your signal.

Prior to 1936 there was not much of Rural America that had electricity. In 1936 The Rural Electrification Act, (part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal), was passed and that ignited moves in a lot of rural areas to have electricity. But really the work had just begun. Rural Electric Cooperatives were formed to provide the service to the rural areas all across the United States. Blue Ridge Mountain Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) was organized in 1937 when a group of businessmen met and decided that this rural area needed power too. You see back then the only areas served with electricity were the cities. The EMC started, and still is operated, as a non-profit, member-owned, Rural Electric Cooperative. From that humble beginning the EMC now serves over 36,500 customers and will continue to grow with the community. Many new products and services are now being offered to our member-owners.

Hybrid Fiber - Non-LOS Broadband Wireless Network - Fort Valley, GA / Peach County area in Georgia
Fort Valley Wireless is a state-of-the-art high-speed wireless broadband network that's one of only a handful of its kind in the state of Georgia. Previous technology required that the communicating parties have a "visual link." In other words, they had to "see" each other.
Sept. 11, 2002 -- Beta testing the new system begins this week and after the bugs are worked out of the system, the commission plans on a citywide launch in mid September
The Fort Valley Utility Commission, Georgia, today announced it has signed a multi year contract with Tri-State Broadband, Inc. and has begun construction on an integrated Hybrid Fiber Wireless (HFW) system, GeorgiaSpeedNet, the first such in Georgia and the southeast.
This new system will provide high-speed Internet connectivity to businesses and residents throughout Fort Valley and the Peach County area. "By integrating our existing broadband fiber network with a wireless non-line-of-site technology, the Fort Valley Utility Commission will be able to offer high-speed Internet connectivity to a much greater number of residents and business through the area, economically and efficiently," said Ken Werner, General Manager of the Fort Valley Utility Commission. Additional phases of the project will extend into Byron and potentially other cities as well.
The new system promises to bring high-speed Internet to users as far away as 6 miles without the need for any wires or phone lines. It works in much the same way as your wireless indoor phone or cell phone, but operates at much greater distance and speed. The 900 MHz Non-LOS technology is relatively new. With our new wireless system we can transmit through trees and buildings up to two miles or so and up to five miles if the foliage is very light. The new network provides both individuals and business broadband access at speeds up to 1.9 Mbps and beyond.
