Cogent has built its Layer 3 (data layer) network from the ground up in a series of connected rings. Each ring has two traffic paths, one going East and one going West. If a fiber is cut, the routers detect the cut and reroute the traffic around the ring in the other direction, restoring the communication within 1 second. This very scenario was put to the test in Manhattan on September 11th and as a result of Cogent's architecture, we were the only ISP that did not experience an interruption in service in lower Manhattan. DBSi has designed and built an extremely reliable (99.99% uptime) high speed, Fibre Optic network. Our networks were built using three telecommunication providers incorporating three diverse and separate paths into DBSi's facility. Flexpop, a privately held Oregon corporation, was started in October, 2000 by veterans (since 1994) of the Internet Service Industry. The entire network includes an approximately 16,000-mile U.S. intercity and 3,600-mile Pan-European network interconnected by a high-capacity transoceanic cable system. National Broadband has two distinct businesses; first to provide Tier 1 Internet access across America on the WilTel fiber network, and second to offer wireless broadband services to communities nationwide. Backhaul Transport Services from the customer’s locations to the Internet, fully encrypted and monitored by NBB at redundant control centers 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, located at WilTel’s national operations center in Tulsa and NBB's Denver monitoring facility. ) Point-to-multipoint NBB will locate a master base station (consisting of wireless radios and antennas) and additional base stations as necessary at optimal points (such as water tanks, hilltops, rooftops, grain elevators, cellular towers, etc.) near the target community or company being served. Multipoint radios use sector antennas with 90-degree coverage each. Each sector antenna can readily service 500 customers; four sector antennas on a base station would service 2000 customers. In an approach similar to cellular telephone networks, as a base station nears saturation, additional base stations are added which can overlap the initial base to provide redundancy and additional reach.

The VSAT network acts as an overlay for the terrestrial WAN by providing backup links between the backbone sites. International connectivity is achieved through gateways at New Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore and Calcutta, with a total capacity of 6.64 Mb. Daily traffic over ERNET exceeds 20 GB. ERNET architecture is based on industry standard TCP/IP protocol, ensuring connectivity from heterogeneous computer systems and local area networks (LANs) at user sites.
