Does Wireless Internet require line-of-site to a tower? Unlike many Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) today, we are very happy to say the answer is No! Cleveland Networks uses commercial grade, proprietary equipment that operates on different, lower frequencies. Think of our solution like your cell phone or your pager. When you want to use them, you don't have to go outside and point them at the nearest tower, they just work. Many WISPs today are using the common 802.11-based equipment operating in the 2.4 ghz range. These solutions usually require outside masts and antennas that point to a tower. Our subscriber unit sits on your desk or the floor and has a small, indoor antenna. In rare cases, such as extreme distances from a tower, an outdoor antenna can be used. We feel that 802.11 equipment is best used in rural areas or in businesses with campus-like layouts for connecting buildings. Additionally, with the amount of equipment currently operating in the 802.11 unlicensed frequency range (i.e. cordless phones, wireless home networks, coffee shops, etc.), we don't feel it's a very good long-term strategy for interference reasons. We are making an investment in quality equipment not found at your local computer store.

Wireless internet access uses 2.4Ghz radio signals to provide your connection to the internet rather than a phone line. This bypasses all the problems associated with using a voice grade phone line and modem. The range on 2.4ghz signals is limited to line of sight. This means the antennas at each end of the link have to be able to see each other with virtually nothing in the way. Unfortunately even trees block the signal. This means that the service will not be available everywhere. The areas Redbird is currently able to reach is the "in town" Mt. Gilead Cardington, and Edison area's. 1 to 2 miles west of Edison may be possible as long as there is a clear line of sight to your east. If you can see the top of the grain elevator in Edison you can receive the signal.

Wireless Internet access is provided to subscribers using commercially-available, low power radio systems operating in the 900MHz, 2.4GHz, and 5.8GHz unlicensed radio spectrum. A Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) system consists of Wireless Points of Presence (WiPOPs) from which the radio signals are broadcast to subscribers, a wireless backbone system which links WiPOPs together and to the global Internet, and a radio antenna and transceiver located at your home or office. Subscriber units can be deployed to support one computer, a small home network, or an entire business network.
