Upload speeds: Up to 11Mb - Download speeds: Up to 11Mb! Wireless is becoming an increasingly popular technology for the provision of broadband, especially in 'hot spot' areas. The term Wi-Fi describes the delivery of bandwidth to a single location from where it is distributed via wireless frequencies within a certain radius to computers or other devices which are within line of sight. The distance of delivery depends on the wireless frequency being used. The lower the frequency, the more restricted the distance. Mesh wireless involves the delivery of Internet bandwidth to a number of locations which is then distributed in a similar way to Wi-Fi. With this system, if one of the locations has a problem, users can tune in to get their Internet connection from an alternative location due to the meshed nature of the provision.

pre-WiMAX Wireless Network - Bristol England - national rollout will commence in early 2005 to over 50 cities and towns throughout the UK

WiMAX is a fast emerging wide-area wireless broadband technology that has been designed as the last mile solution for bringing high-speed Internet access into homes and businesses. WiMAX will deliver wireless broadband access to the masses. It represents an inexpensive alternative to digital subscriber lines (DSL) and cable broadband access.

Libera is at the forefront of this exciting new technology. We are building an entirely new WiMAX network that will reach over 75% of UK businesses providing them for the first time with cost-effective, high-bandwidth broadband communications.

Until now, broadband in the UK has been limited by BTs effective monopoly over the last mile to a choice between the restricted bandwidth and reliability of copper wire Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and the high cost and long delivery times of fibre-based services. However, in order to remain competitive, UK businesses need true broadband that is both reliable and cost-effective - i.e. considerably more than the 1-2Mbps ADSL (asymmetric DSL) that is generally available. High-capacity symmetrical broadband is fundamental to the delivery of high-speed Internet access, peer-to-peer communications and new IP based integrated voice, data, video and IT applications that will allow organisations to reduce costs and improve efficiency and productivity.

Libera offers Committed Data Rates of 1-50Mbps over its wireless broadband network and a compelling price/performance advantage over BTs DSL and fibre-based access services. Unlike our competitors we own our entire access network and do not rent copper wires from BT's legacy network - known as the 'Local Loop' - and since we are not beholden to BT we offer highly competitive prices, quality of service and delivery times. Libera is the only true access alternative to BT capable of providing diverse routing for mission critical applications for the vast majority of small/medium business customers.

In addition to Internet access, Libera can deliver voice over IP (VoIP), Video, data, IT and security services to Small Office/Home Office (SoHo) and Small/Medium Enterprise (SME) businesses. Libera is also working with wholesale partners, including telecoms carriers, ISPs and IT integrators, who will provide Libera's wireless broadband access service to large enterprises and the public sector.

The first-stage - a pre-WiMAX trial network has been installed in Bristol. Various engineering and marketing trials are currently being conducted following which a national rollout will commence in early 2005 to over 50 cities and towns throughout the UK.

The signal is produced by a number of base stations with large bandwidth capacity, strategically placed around West Kent and East Sussex.
